In early 1996 Fred Ritchin approached me with the offer to work with him and Gilles Peres on a site to showcase Gilles' work in Bosnia detailing the change from civil war to an uncertain peace. We worked with a team from the New York Times online and I was responsible for designing and developing the front end of the photo-essay section. This I did at Indigo Information Designers with Lucy Kneebone and Melissa Tardiff. The Photo essay contained about 150 photos which we allowed the users to navigate through using a number of navigation models:

1. Gilles' Narrative: We follow Gilles in his travels through Bosnia, picking up different stories on the way.

2. Geography: Users can navigate the story through the geography (City, neighborhoods) in which the photo essay takes place.

3. Visually: using an editing floor metaphor we allowed the users to choose to enter the story anywhere they liked via the image grid (which represented the major story sections).

Throughout the site users have multiple locations in which the three navigation schemes intersect, allowing the user to go off on a tangent, while making it easy to return to the "main road" a bit later on.

The project was received with much praise and success and made history by being he first web site to be nominated for a Pulitzer prize.
