In 1994 Bob Stein came to do a mass interview session at ITP. After making him yawn at some of my earlier computer based educational materials, I showed him my "The Opening Screen" project which screams and stresses out the user and ends up taking over the computer and shutting it down. He loved it and I got a job at Voyager- the then prestigious interactive factory!

In this project I was the assistant producer and responsible for developing a cool interface, good quality video and exploring innovative interaction models. I chose to explore the use of the then new Quicktime 1.6.1 subtitle track. The idea was to use the track as a searchable database that was synched to the video tracks. Viola- a user could enter a text query and in less than a second would see the visual result in front of them. Enter "Tongue" and you see the actor sticking his tongue out. Enter Billy Crystal and you see him in an early cameo.

The UI itself was modeled after the famous Marshal Amps that show up in the movie. The volume knobs in the interface even go up to 11!

This was an extremely fun project which received a lot of press in its time, but alas, the CD-Rom industry was soon to hit by the web tsunami.
